His ministry  most recently spent millions warning the world that the end of days would come on 21 May 2011 which never happened in reality though. INDIAN DX REPORT: Part-15

Date of Broadcast: 28th Saturday 2013, Saturday
Program: KBS Listeners' Lounge- Weekly Listening Tips.
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Namaskar and hello everyone where ever you are!! I am Prithwiraj, your host for another edition of Indian DX Report here on KBS Listener' Lounge. I would like to thank all my fellow DXers around the world who sent me feedbacks and reception reports on previous edition of IDXR and hope that you will keep supporting my small initiative from India in coming months too. So let's begin:-

Durga Puja- the five day long worship of Goddess Durga- is the most important and sacred festival for Hindus residing specially in Eastern part of India and this is the most happening festival for Bengalies around the world. Countdown of this great Indian festival of Durga Puja starts from the day of Mahalaya, that is, seven days before the start of five day long religious festival. Since the early 1930s, Mahalaya has come to associate itself with an early morning radio program called “Mahisasura Mardini” on  All India Radio. This program is a beautiful audio montage of recitation from the scriptural verses of “Chandi Kavya” by Late Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Bengali devotional songs, classical music and a dash of acoustic melodrama. This year All India Radio will be doing this special transmission for "Mahalaya" on 4th October, 2013 (Friday) early morning Indian time, that is, according to UTC time from 2225 UTC (3rd October,Thursday) to 0015 hour UTC (4th October, Friday). For DXers this is a great opportunity to catch AIR regional stations on Shortwave as well as Medium Wave. The following AIR stations usually broadcast this special transmission on Shortwave. 4760 kHz - Port Blair, 4810 kHz – Bhopal, 4820 kHz- Kolkata, 4835 kHz – Gangtok, 4880 kHz – Lucknow, 4895 kHz – Kurseong, 4940 kHz – Guwahati, 4965 kHz – Shimla, 9425 kHz - Delhi (Khampur) and 9470 kHz- Aligarh. Apart from these Shortwave stations many AIR regional stations also broadcast this special Mahalay transmission on Mediumwave.  If you hear any AIR regional station with this special transmission then please send your reception reports to:-

After remaining silent for some weeks, AIR Itanagar transmitting from beautiful Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering China and Tibet, is back again on shortwave 4990 kHz. AIR Itanagar now can be heard from 0020 to 0400 and 1000 to 1600 hour UTC on 4990 kHz. Another AIR station from North East India, AIR Shillong, which has been reported to be distract from its official frequency 4970 kHz and transmitted on 4971 kHz for some days, is now back again on the correct frequency. AIR Shillong can be heard on 4970 kHz between 0025 to 0400 UTC and 1056 to 1630 UTC. But unfortunately AIR Kohima which was heard back during mid August on 4850 kHz is again missing on this frequency and AIR Guwahati on 4940 kHz is still off air.

After their successful shortwave transmissions via Trincomalee relay station, PCJ Radio Internation has now announced to test on DRM. According to a press release PCJ will conduct a two hour DRM test transmission on 13th October between 1030 to 1230 UTC on 15645 kHz beaming towards South and South East Asia and the broadcast will comprise News, magazine program "Switzerland in Sound", PCJ's pupular DX show "Media Network Plus" and a documentary "War Time Deception"  Jonathan Marks. If you hear this DRM signal from PCJ then you can send your reports to <pcjqsl@pcjmedia.com>

And here is a quick reception summery of some stations I received in last couple of weeks here in my location at Jorhat in the north eastern part of India.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation transmitting from Trincomalee in Hindi received on 11905 kHz between 0130 to 0300 UTC.

Radio Pakistan from Islamabad in Urdu received on 15725 kHz with not much satisfactory reception though around 0925 UTC.

Radio Romania International in English can be heard in Indian subcontinent on 17830 kHz between 0300 to 0400 UTC.

Vatican Radio in English was heard on 15470 kHz between 0140 to 0200 UTC followed by Hindi transmission till 0257 UTC on 15460 kHz. Vatican Radio in Hindi was also heard well from 1440 UTC to 1420 UTC on 15110 kHz.

Voice of Russia in English was heard loud and clear on 21800 kHz and 21820 around 0930 UTC. Hindi transmission of Voice of Russia was heard on 7505 kHz between 1300 to 1400 hour UTC.

Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Hindi was heard on 13750 kHz between 0200 to 0300 UTC.

TRT- Voice of Turkey English language transmission can be heard well in heard in Indian subcontinent between 1630 to 1727 UTC on 15520 kHz.

INDIAN DX REPORT: Part-14

Date of Broadcast: 31st August 2013, Saturday
Program: KBS Listeners' Lounge- Weekly Listening Tips.
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Namaskar and hello friends! Welcome to August edition of Indian DX Report on KBS Listener's Launge. I am your host Prithwiraj from Assam. So lets begin with some DX News and first a sad news for Shortwave radio enthusiasts.

According to a Russian news magazine, Voice of Russia will stop its shortwave broadcasts from 1st January 2014 and they are doing this again due to budget cuts, following the same path already adopted by many other international broadcasters specially from Europe. Voice of Russia, established in 1929, currently uses RTRBN transmitters to broadcast to foreign countries using short and medium waves. After the shortwave service goes off the air, only three low-power medium wave transmitters will be used to broadcast to other countries and they will mostly use FM band transmitters based abroad, the magazine said. At the beginning of this year, Voice of Russia cut the total volume of shortwave broadcasts to 26 hours a day from more than 50 hours in 2012. For South Asia, apart from English Voice of Russia currently broadcasting in Hindi between 1300 to 1400 UTC on 7505, 9445 and 11530 kHz and between 1500 to 1600 UTC on 7505 and 9445 kHz. VOR Urdu language broadcast can be heard between 1400 to 1500 UTC on 7505 and 9445 kHz.

After remaining silent in August, PCJ Radio International will again start broadcast its Sunday only one hour shortwave programs from 1st September from 1330 to 1430 UTC on 11835 kHz with Focus Asia Pacific with Andy Sennitt  and the Happy Station Show with Keith Perron.

On 15th August every year India and South Korea celebrate their independence day with lots of joy and emotions.  In India as a tradition, every year the honourable president of India address the nation on the eve of Independence day, that is, on 14th August evening and on Independence day, that is, on 15th August the Prime Minister of nation hoists the national flag at New Delhi's Red Fort and address the nation from there. India's national broadcaster All India Radio and all its regional stations broadcast both these events "live" on shortwave, medium wave and FM bands and  for DXers who love to tune regional shortwave stations of All India Radio this is a nice opportunity to try and log AIR stations, may be some rare and irregular ones also. This year I have monitored both these special independence day coverages and found that All India Radio Kohima station operating from North Eastern state of Nagaland was heard after several month's  silence on 4850 kHz and MW 639 kHz around 1330 UTC and 0130 UTC with nice and loud reception. Another North eastern station Aizawl from Mizoram province was also heard with decent reception on 5050 kHz around the same time. AIR Shillong from Meghalaya province was found good enough on 4971 kHz instead of their official frequency 4970 kHz on 15th August morning covering main function from Red Fort. AIR Itanagar from Arunachal Pradesh province bordering China was off air on SW 4990 kHz, but I heard them on MW 675 kHz with Independence Day coverage. AIR Guwahati from my home state Assam, was heard on 7420 kHz on 15th August morning but nothing was on 4940 kHz which has been reported off air for some time now. AIR Imphal is still off air on both  7335 kHz and 4775 kHz. AIR Gangtok from Sikkim was heard on 4835 kHz but the reception was not that satisfactory here in my QTH. Here is a quick reception summary of other AIR stations I have monitored on 15th August between 0130-0245 UTC.

11985 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 45444
15050 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 55555
9595 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 55444
11620 kHz- B'luru- SINPO 35333
7380 kHz- Chennai- SINPO 35333
7420 kHz- Hyderabad- Not Heard
7210 kHz- Kolkata- SINPO 35222
4880 kHz- Lucknow- SINPO 25222
4895 kHz- Kurseong- SINPO 35333

And with this I would like to conclude this edition of DX report from India and I hope that this will be useful and interesting to you. INDIAN DX REPORT: Part-13

Date of Broadcast: 27th July 2013, Saturday
Program: KBS Listeners' Lounge- Weekly Listening Tips.
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Namaskar friends and welcome to July edition of Indian DX Report. I am your host Prithwiraj and my hearty greetings to all KBS listeners who are observing the Holy Ramazan in this month all over the world. So lets begin with some DX News.

All India Radio completed 86 years of service to the people of India. A symposium - Radio in Digital Age - was held in New Delhi on 22nd July on completion of 86 years of Radio Broadcasting in India. Noted Agricultural Scientist Dr M S Swaminathan have extolled All India Radio for its services to India for more than 8 decades. Established in 1930, All India Radio is one of the largest radio networks in the world. Its headquarters is at the Akashvani Bhavan in New Delhi.

AIR Radio Kashmir from Srinagar, India is broadcasting an one hour special program on occation of Holy Ramzan between 2130 to 2230 UTC on 4950 & 1116 kHz. These special broadcast of about 1 hour duration will continue till the Ramzan festival.

After 65 years of broadcasting, one of the most heard and popular SW station from Israel "Kol Israel" has suspended its only remaining shortwave broadcasts in Farsi to Iran at the beginning of July which means that this station will not be heard on shortwave any more. The long time shortwave listeners may remember that Kol Israel used to broadcast overseas programs in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Georgian, Persian, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, as well as a home service program in Hebrew and external service in other Jewish languages. They also had a DX-Program in English, hosted by Ben Dalfen, aired on Sundays.

All though Voice of Greece, better known as ERT,  went off the air in June, but still some DXers reporting that GREECE ERT transmitting in English, instead in Greek between 1300-1315 on 9420 kHz. If you have still not QSLed this station you try your luck on that time and frequency which is targeted towards West Europe.

If you would like to stay connected with the latest DX news from Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives then you can bookmark http://dxasia.in/ in your laptop or PC internet browser. This is a beautiful online DX resource from South Asia maintained and contributed by ace Dxers like Victor Goonetilleke of Sri Lanka and Alok Dasgupta of India. In this website along with DX news you can also get the updated transmission schedules of government run shortwave, medium wave and FM stations of these countries.

And here are some important monitoring observations done by me in this month.

PCJ Radio continues it's weekend shortwave broadcast on Sundays via SLBC Trincomalee and well received on 11835 kHz between 1330 to 1430 UTC. This special weekly transmission consist of news magazine "Focus Asia Pacific" for first 15 minutes and Happy Station show till remaining 45 minutes.

TRT- Voice of Turkey in English was heard on 15220 kHz between 1630-1700 hour UTC with SINPO 45444

Voice of Vietnam in English was heard on 9730 kHz between 1600-1628 UTC and the SINPO was 45444

Recently my fellow DXer Gautam Kumar Sharma of Abhayapuri, Assam sent me his monitoring observation for few AIR stations of Eastern India. I am please to include this in this edition of IDXR. Gautam informed that AIR Kashmir was heard by me on 4870 kHz around 1402 UTC on June 16t with few a Hindi flim Songs. The audio was slightly rough. He also heard ABC Alice Springs on 4835 kHz on the same day around 1400 UTC while looking for AIR Gangtok which is off the air for some time now. As per his monitoring on AIR regional radio stations from North East Region, AIR-Imphal, AIR-Guwahati & AIR-Kohima are off the air on their respective shortwave frequencies. But AIR-Aizawl's signal in the morning has been improved slightly on 5050 kHz & can be heard without any QRM. AIR-Itanagar can be heard regularly on 4990 kHz.

According to some newspaper reports, the famous Lord Jagannatha Temple of Puri will host a FM radio station soon. The temple administration has decided to start this FM station to disseminate information on Lord Jagannath. The proposed project would be commissioned at a cost of around Rupees 4 crore and Programmes to be aired through the proposed radio station include devotional songs, daily rituals and discourses relating to the Lord, etc. Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri in the Odhisa state of India is popular Hindu pilgrimage and famous for its annual Ratha Yatra festival.

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has dropped its All Asia English Service which goes back to the early days of commercial broadcasting in 1950s and is having a single Hindi service from 0115-0330 UTC on 11905 kHz now. In this service sponsored English Gospel programmes are also inserted. Meanwhile the SLBC service to the Middle East targeting Sri Lankan workers is transmitted from 1630-1830 UTC on 11750 kHz on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday only.  The service to South India in Malayalam and Tamil between 1115-1215 UTC has been moved to 9720 from 21st  June.

While many major international broadcasters ceasing or reducing their broadcasts targeting Asia, Taiwan based PCJ Radio International is emerging as a new start in the shortwave medium. After its successful test transmissions targeting listeners in Asia, PCJ has also tested SW transmissions towards Europe and North America via transmitter at Nauen clearly indicating its future plan to take hold of Shortwave bands. Meanwhile PCJ's international "Sunday only" broadcasts via Trincomalee has been extended till August 2013 and from 30th June onwards their one hour Sunday transmissions can be heard from 1330 to 1430 UTC on 11835 kHz.

And at last just want to remind you that The big 2013 Adventist World Radio Annual DX Contest will under-way from July 1st and will run till the end of July. As Adventist World Radio enters into its 42nd year of international radio broadcasting, they have announced their annual “Wavescan” DX contest under the title, “Focus on Africa”. Greetings friends and welcome to this month's DX tips from Indian DX Report on KBS Listeners' Lounge. I am your host Prithwiraj and hope you all are keeping fine. So lets begin with few DX news from Asia.

Radio Taiwan International has recently announced in their website that it's transmissions towards the Philippines in English between 0100  to 0200 UTC on 11875 kHz and between 1100 to 1200 UTC on 9465 kHz will close from July 1st!! However, their Medium Wave transmission from 1100 to 1200  hour UTC on 1359 KHz will remains unchanged.

According to a news published recently, China Radio International’s Tamil service is all set to launch its FM station in India as part of its 50th anniversary this year. CRI Tamil, which broadcasts on shortwave targeting Tamil Nadu in India, is in talks with some FM stations in Chennai. The Tamil service of CRI was started in August 1963 and besides Tamil, CRI broadcasts in three other Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. If this proposal of CRI realised the this will establish CRI's footing in the FM area of India.
Taiwan based PCJ Radio has recently started a series of Shortwave test transmissions via SLBC relay station in Trincomalee beamed to East and South East Asia with a powerful 125 kW transmitter.  On 19th MaySunday they successfully conducted this test transmission between 1300 to 1400 hour UTC on 11750 kHz and three more test transmissions are scheduled on this same frequency and time on 26th May, 2nd June and 9th June, Sundays. Printed and eQSLs are offered by this station for correct reception reports for these test transmissions.
All India Radio Port Blair station transmitting with a 10 KW transmitter from Beautiful Indian Islands of Andaman and Nicobar is reported missing on 4760 kHz due to a breakdown in transmitter. The station engineers are trying best to restore the faults and hopefully AIR Port Blair will be soon on air again. Here is the current transmission schedule of AIR Port Blair:-  2355 to 0300 hour UTC and 1030 to 1700 or 1730 UTC on 4760 kHz; AIR Port Blair is also available on  7390 kHz between 0315 to 0400 UTC (Saturdays till 0415 UTC and on Sundays till  0500 UTC) and  0700 to 0931 UTC (on Sundays till 1000 UTC).
And well, I would like to conclude this edition of Indian DX Report with some good news for our listeners in Bangladesh. News is that Bangladesh Betar is seems to strengthen its FM transmission power within the country as they has installed some new BE FM 10S 10 kW FM transmitters at following cities & currently test transmissions being carried on - Dhaka on 102.0 MHz, 104.0 MHz, 106.0 MHz, Sylhet 88.8 MHz, Rangpur 88.8 MHz, Comilla 103.6 MHz, Coxesbazar 100.8 MHz, Khulna 88.8 MHz, Noapara, Jessore 100.8 MHz, Rajshahi 88.8 MHz, Chittagong 88.8 MHz and in Barisal on 105.0 MHz.

Station: KBS World Radio
Program: KBS Listeners' Lounge- Weekly Listening Tips.
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Greetings friends and welcome to a new edition of Indian DX Report on KBS Listeners' Lounge. I am your host Prithwiraj. As always I would like to start this month's DX tips with few updates from All India Radio.

As we all know that from 31st MarchSunday, the summer A13 transmission schedule of all international Shortwave broadcasters began. But AIR External Service & Home Service on SW has not made any changes in their A-13 schedules compared to B-12 schedules! That means AIR external service and home services may still tuned on the same frequencies and schedules as it was available during last winter. For complete A13 schedule of AIR you can log into www.allindiaradio.gov.in or for a DXer friendly schedule please have a look into http://qsl.net/vu2jos/sw/freq.htm , a wonderful DX resource page maintained by Mr. Jose Jacob, the Assistant Director of  National Institute of Amateur Radio at Hyderabad.

Recently many regional stations of All India Radio are aiming to rope in DRM transmitters to improve its transmission and content quality. After successfully testing the signals as part of a live in-car demo, the DRM signals will now be tested in AIR Bengaluru to monitor the quality of broadcast. From 22nd April AIR Bengaluru is testing DRM signals for around a week  using a 500 kW transmitter for their Vividh Bharati Service on 9870 kHz. The schedule for broadcast will be in three segments; from 0025 to 0435 UTC, from 0900 to 1200 UTC and  from 1245 to 1740  UTC. The station is interested in reception report mainly from Indian listeners at various timings. Reports can be sent to -

Suptg. Engineer, AIR, Super Power Transmitter, Bengaluru, Karnataka  Or  it may be emailed to:sptairynk@rediffmail.com

Mr. Atanu Das, a producer at RVA Bengali Service at "Chitravani" Kolkata informed me that Radio Veritas Asia is interested in reception reports for their different language services from listeners and they promise to verify with QSL cards and Stickers. Reception reports for all day's transmission in a week will be highly appreciated. Latest frequency schedule of RVA can be found at RVA website www.rveritas-asia.org and reports can be mailed to <arleneadonarber@gmail.com>.
