Wavescan-Indian DX Report: 8th Edition

INDIAN DX REPORT: Part-15

Date of Broadcast: 29th September, 2013, SUNDAY
Program: AWR Wavescan
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Namaskar and hello everyone where ever you are!! I am Prithwiraj, your host for another edition of Indian DX Report here on Wavescan. I would like to thank all my fellow DXers around the world who sent me feedbacks and reception reports on previous edition of IDXR and hope that you will keep supporting my small DX initiative from India in coming months too. So let's begin:-

This is a recording from famous Indian radio program “Mahisasura Mardini” by which the countdown of great Indian festival of Durga Puja starts from the day of Mahalaya, that is, seven days before the start of five day long religious festival.  Durga Puja- is the most important and sacred festival for Hindus residing specially in Eastern part of India and this is the most happening festival for Bengalies around the world. Since the early 1930s, Mahalaya has come to associate itself with this early morning radio program called “Mahisasura Mardini” on  All India Radio. This program is a beautiful audio montage of recitation from the scriptural verses of “Chandi Kavya” by Late Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Bengali devotional songs, classical music and a dash of acoustic melodrama.

This year also All India Radio will be doing this special transmission for "Mahalaya" on 4th October, 2013 (Friday) early morning Indian time, that is, according to UTC time from 2225 UTC on 3rd October,Thursday to 0015 hour UTC of 4th October, Friday. For DXers this is a great opportunity to catch AIR regional stations on Shortwave as well as Medium Wave. The following AIR stations usually broadcast this special transmission on Shortwave. 4760 kHz - Port Blair, 4810 kHz – Bhopal, 4820 kHz- Kolkata, 4835 kHz – Gangtok, 4880 kHz – Lucknow, 4895 kHz – Kurseong, 4940 kHz – Guwahati, 4965 kHz – Shimla, 9425 kHz - Delhi (Khampur) and 9470 kHz- Aligarh. Apart from these Shortwave stations many AIR regional stations also broadcast this special Mahalay transmission on Mediumwave.  If you hear any AIR regional station with this special transmission then please send your reception reports to:-

After remaining silent for some weeks, AIR Itanagar transmitting from beautiful Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering China and Tibet, is back again on shortwave 4990 kHz. AIR Itanagar now can be heard from 0020 to 0400 and 1000 to 1600 hour UTC on 4990 kHz. Another AIR station from North East India, AIR Shillong, which has been reported to be distract from its official frequency 4970 kHz and transmitted on 4971 kHz for some days, is now back again on the correct frequency. AIR Shillong can be heard on 4970 kHz between 0025 to 0400 UTC and 1056 to 1630 UTC. But unfortunately AIR Kohima which was heard back during mid August on 4850 kHz is again missing on this frequency and AIR Guwahati on 4940 kHz is still off air.

After their successful shortwave transmissions via Trincomalee relay station, PCJ Radio International has now announced to test on DRM. According to a press release PCJ will conduct a two hour DRM test transmission on 13th October between 1030 to 1230 UTC on 15645 kHz beaming towards South and South East Asia and the broadcast will comprise News, magazine program "Switzerland in Sound", PCJ's pupular DX show "Media Network Plus" and a documentary "War Time Deception"  Jonathan Marks. If you hear this DRM signal from PCJ then you can send your reports to <pcjqsl@pcjmedia.com>

And here is a quick reception summery of some stations I received in last couple of weeks here in my location at Jorhat in the north eastern part of India.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation transmitting from Trincomalee in Hindi received on 11905 kHz between 0130 to 0300 UTC.

Radio Pakistan from Islamabad in Urdu received on 15725 kHz with not much satisfactory reception though around 0925 UTC.

I would like to thank all my fellow DXers around the world who sent me feedbacks and reception reports on previous edition of IDXR and hope that you will keep supporting my small initiative from India in coming months too. So let's begin:-

Durga Puja- the five day long worship of Goddess Durga- is the most important and sacred festival for Hindus residing specially in Eastern part of India and this is the most happening festival for Bengalies around the world. Countdown of this great Indian festival of Durga Puja starts from the day of Mahalaya, that is, seven days before the start of five day long religious festival. Since the early 1930s, Mahalaya has come to associate itself with an early morning radio program called “Mahisasura Mardini” on  All India Radio. This program is a beautiful audio montage of recitation from the scriptural verses of “Chandi Kavya” by Late Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Bengali devotional songs, classical music and a dash of acoustic melodrama. This year All India Radio will be doing this special transmission for "Mahalaya" on 4th October, 2013 (Friday) early morning Indian time, that is, according to UTC time from 2225 UTC (3rd October,Thursday) to 0015 hour UTC (4th October, Friday).

After their successful shortwave transmissions via Trincomalee relay station, PCJ Radio Internation has now announced to test on DRM. KBS World Radio- Indian DX Report: 8th Edition

INDIAN DX REPORT: Part-14

Date of Broadcast: 31st August 2013, Saturday
Program: KBS Listeners' Lounge- Weekly Listening Tips.
Presenter: Prithwiraj Purkayastha

Namaskar and hello friends! Welcome to August edition of Indian DX Report on KBS Listener's Launge. I am your host Prithwiraj from Assam. So lets begin with some DX News and first a sad news for Shortwave radio enthusiasts.

According to a Russian news magazine, Voice of Russia will stop its shortwave broadcasts from 1st January 2014 and they are doing this again due to budget cuts, following the same path already adopted by many other international broadcasters specially from Europe. Voice of Russia, established in 1929, currently uses RTRBN transmitters to broadcast to foreign countries using short and medium waves. After the shortwave service goes off the air, only three low-power medium wave transmitters will be used to broadcast to other countries and they will mostly use FM band transmitters based abroad, the magazine said. At the beginning of this year, Voice of Russia cut the total volume of shortwave broadcasts to 26 hours a day from more than 50 hours in 2012. For South Asia, apart from English Voice of Russia currently broadcasting in Hindi between 1300 to 1400 UTC on 7505, 9445 and 11530 kHz and between 1500 to 1600 UTC on 7505 and 9445 kHz. VOR Urdu language broadcast can be heard between 1400 to 1500 UTC on 7505 and 9445 kHz.

After remaining silent in August, PCJ Radio International will again start broadcast its Sunday only one hour shortwave programs from 1st September from 1330 to 1430 UTC on 11835 kHz with Focus Asia Pacific with Andy Sennitt  and the Happy Station Show with Keith Perron.

On 15th August every year India and South Korea celebrate their independence day with lots of joy and emotions.  In India as a tradition, every year the honourable president of India address the nation on the eve of Independence day, that is, on 14th August evening and on Independence day, that is, on 15th August the Prime Minister of nation hoists the national flag at New Delhi's Red Fort and address the nation from there. India's national broadcaster All India Radio and all its regional stations broadcast both these events "live" on shortwave, medium wave and FM bands and  for DXers who love to tune regional shortwave stations of All India Radio this is a nice opportunity to try and log AIR stations, may be some rare and irregular ones also. This year I have monitored both these special independence day coverages and found that All India Radio Kohima station operating from North Eastern state of Nagaland was heard after several month's  silence on 4850 kHz and MW 639 kHz around 1330 UTC and 0130 UTC with nice and loud reception. Another North eastern station Aizawl from Mizoram province was also heard with decent reception on 5050 kHz around the same time. AIR Shillong from Meghalaya province was found good enough on 4971 kHz instead of their official frequency 4970 kHz on 15th August morning covering main function from Red Fort. AIR Itanagar from Arunachal Pradesh province bordering China was off air on SW 4990 kHz, but I heard them on MW 675 kHz with Independence Day coverage. AIR Guwahati from my home state Assam, was heard on 7420 kHz on 15th August morning but nothing was on 4940 kHz which has been reported off air for some time now. AIR Imphal is still off air on both  7335 kHz and 4775 kHz. AIR Gangtok from Sikkim was heard on 4835 kHz but the reception was not that satisfactory here in my QTH. Here is a quick reception summary of other AIR stations I have monitored on 15th August between 0130-0245 UTC.

11985 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 45444
15050 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 55555
9595 kHz- Delhi- SINPO 55444
11620 kHz- B'luru- SINPO 35333
7380 kHz- Chennai- SINPO 35333
7420 kHz- Hyderabad- Not Heard
7210 kHz- Kolkata- SINPO 35222
4880 kHz- Lucknow- SINPO 25222
4895 kHz- Kurseong- SINPO 35333

And with this I would like to conclude this edition of DX report from India and I hope that this will be useful and interesting to you.
